What our customers say..

We wanted to share some positive feedback from some of our recent customers.  Many of our customers buy on-line from us and we arrange their transportation and shipping all over the world...and more locally.

"...our action 'moving the big armoire' is done! We got everything! Thank you very much!"

Jana Plodkova

December 2011

Jana purchased an antique Qing Dynasty Armoire. ( We still have one left if it catches anyone's eye!)

"I´m glad to say that the cabinet is already at home and I´m very happy. It was all an adventure with the English driver, a very kind man, but it was all fine. Thank you very much for everything. We might contact you again in the future"

Eva Urbano

Zaragoza, Spain
November 2011

Eva brought one of our current run of Haberdashery Cabinets. We have more in stock and coming into stock - so do contact us if you are interested in more details.

Stephanie Keelan

London
December 2011

Stephanie snapped up the Kodak Slide-viewer featured in our recent newsletter leaving many people disappointed - it was a great piece. Congratulations Stephanie!

"It worked! Got the T-spanner (in fact, me and my mates have loads of them, just did not know a 5 sided tool would work too) and opened the explosion lamp, fitted a bulb and hung it over my desk in my office! Fantastic!!! I love it!’

Diederick Kraaijeveld

Amsterdam
December 2011

Diederick brought an explosion lamp from us in our store on impulse just before flying home. We were able to help him with a few fitting issues and luckily he didn't regret his purchase! During our email exchanges we now realise that Diederick is an internationally reknowned recycling artist - you can see Diederick's recycled artwork here.

British Design Awards 2011 - Best Product Design.

Congratulations and very well done to Rupert Blanchard - pictured above with his cat! - for scooping 'Best Product Design' in the prestigious British Design Awards 2011.

We have been backing, promoting and selling his upcycled drawer cabinets for a number of years now and we are very pleased that this popular and thoughtful product has now been more widely recognized.

A very big thankyou to everyone who voted and congratulations to everyone who has already purchased one of these award-winning cabinets from us. We currently have some pieces in stock - which are available to purchase securely online or can be seen on display at our Spitalfields store. Click on the images below for more details.

Luggage Racks

As a general rule we usually love to restore the things that we find. For instance these aluminium luggage racks look fantastic when they have been mirror polished. However we realise that this look is not for eveyone.

We have such a huge stock of these salvaged luggage racks that we are releasing part of the run in the original salvaged condition. As you can see from some of the pictures here they are still extremely charming in this condition with interesting textures and colours.

The other bonus is that the polishing is a skillful and time-consuming process. Buying a luggage rack that has not been mirror polished also makes it considerably cheaper!

Please click on the images below to take a closer look at the polished or unpolished luggage racks on our website. Or you are very welcome to pop in to see them at our Spitalfields store. We are open Tuesday-Sunday 9am-6pm.

New Arrivals

We have just updated lots of new items online. There is a taster of some of our favourite pieces below but do have a look at our new arrivals sections for more. If you need more details or if you wish to reserve or purchase any item just let us know.

The Independent - 50 best furniture shops

Kate Watson-Smyth of The Independent tracked down the hidden gems to help you decorate your home. And she named elemental as one of the 50 best furniture shops in the UK. Thanks Kate! Click on the image to go to the article.

'elemental - the trick with vintage is to know how to use it and the odd piece scattered in with more contemporary furniture is probably the best way to avoid overkill. A fabulous clock, an old table with modern chairs. This store has those dramatic pieces'.

Some odd customers...

One of the things about having a store in Spitalfields is that you are never sure who you are going to bump in to or who is going to walk in through the door. Celebrities, artists, musicians, footballers or even dragons..... However we were quite taken by surprise recently at this ensemble of very unusual characters.

We are still not sure who they were, where they came from or quite what they were doing..... but nevertheless they were enthusiastic at the prospect of posing for pictures with some of our furniture.

New Arrivals

There is lots of new stock arriving on a daily basis at our warehouse from all over the UK and Europe. Our Spitalfields store has new stock every Sunday. And the website has just been updated with some of our latest finds. Click on the images for more photographs and information.

Jamie's Italian Birmingham

Our steel-tube chairs have been popping up all over the place during the last 12 months. We have supplied several runs of chairs for Jamie Oliver's expanding group of restaurants through our friends at Blacksheep.

More of photographer Gareth Gardner's pictures of the interior of the restaurant can be seen here.

We have several good runs of steel-tube chairs currently in stock - some of which were highlighted in our recent exhibition.

An exhibition of British steel-tube chairs from 1930s to 1960s

For the London Design Festival we will be hosting an exhibition in the forecourt of our Spitalfields Store to highlight some of the variety of British Steel-Tube Chairs manufactured from the 1930s to 1960s. The exhibition runs from 22nd-30th September 2011. Please come along to see it!

A selection of 13 chairs from producers such as Bamco, Du-al, Cox, Pel, Kingfisher and Remploy will be on display. This classic British chair has had many variations of design within the same form. They were first supplied in the 1930s by firms such as PEL as contract furniture for railways, hospitals, universities and schools.

These companies based mainly in the Bristish Midlands were associated with some of the great architects of the day. People such as Oliver Bernhard - the art deco architect and industrial designer; Wells Coates - the seminal figure of the Modern Movement; Serge Chermayeff - British Modernist Movement designer of the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea.

The chairs were very successful and produced great revenues for Midlands firms during the economic gloom of the 1930s. The practical, clean and comfortable design of this 'austerity' chair is more appealing than ever today and their understated design is becoming sought after for today's vintage inspired modern interiors.

The Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club is now open for breakfast, lunch, brunch and more just around the corner from us in Spitalfields.

They have a great homely vintage feel to the place and great homely food to match.

We supplied them with an impressive run of eight salvaged school gym benches which they have used very imaginatively to create dining cubicles in the cafe.

A huge refurbished double faced illuminated clock that we removed from Manston Airport in Kent is is now perched above their door to welcome you at any time of the day or evening.

A simple run of reclaimed factory lights have been effectively used to illuminate the dining booths. If you are looking for vintage lighting or for inspiration for your project then do have a look at what we currently have on offer.

We have more big illuminated clocks coming through at the moment. Do keep an eye on the new arrivals section of our website if it's something that you think you might fancy. Or just give us a call. Or pop into our Spitalfields Store to enquire.

Refurbishment Project

Not something that we do on a regular basis - but an interesting project to refit a new build studio and gallery space in London's trendy Shoreditch. We sourced and meticulously fitted (well done Martin for your persistance) 100 square metres of reclaimed strip maple gym flooring to give a pleasingly 'authentic' look.

We left lots of exposed block and concrete to help with the industrial look albeit cleaned and sealed. It provides a neat contrast with the clean white lines of the plastered surfaces. We had metal concertina grills fitted at the windows for a secure finish to the look.

The ceiling was relatively low so it was left exposed and fitted with galvanised conduit. We complemented the reclaimed floor and the bare ceiling with 20 of our salvaged fisherman lamps with grey enamel shades. We removed the cages to avoid any chances of  'head-knock' for tall people. Instead of using chain sets they were mounted on threaded metal tube and fixed to the exposed metal conduit with matching galvanised boxes (thankyou Pat for your resourcefulness).
